Can You Visit Sveti Stefan in Montenegro? (2026 Guide + Best Viewpoints).

It was a challenging bike ride in the Montenegrin heat… however, the scenery was beautiful….

After three tunnels…. five beaches… and a gorgeous park… There it was, finally.

Sveti Stefan Island in the distance!

The Island of Sveti Stefanin Montenegro is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

If you are intrigued by the mystery of Sveti Stefan in Budva, then keep reading, as I explain what the iconic island is like.

I also took some awesome photos on my trip to the Island, for you to enjoy!

Sveti Stefan is just one of many beautiful islands in Montenegro, however, it is definitely the best one..

A day admiring the beautiful island will be one of the best additions to your Montenegro itinerary.

Can you visit Sveti Stefan?

No — you can’t freely walk around Sveti Stefan island itself, as it’s a private luxury resort.

However, you can still visit the beaches, walk along the causeway, and enjoy some of the best viewpoints in Montenegro.

Most travellers visit Sveti Stefan for the iconic photo spots rather than access to the island itself — and it’s still absolutely worth it.

Is Sveti Stefan worth visiting?

Yes, Sveti Stefan is absolutely worth visiting, especially if you enjoy coastal views, photography, scenic road trips and beautiful places that feel slightly surreal.

However, it is worth visiting for the right reasons.

If you are expecting a lively old town full of cafés, souvenir shops and streets to explore, Sveti Stefan may feel disappointing…

The island itself is not usually somewhere you can freely wander, and the experience is more about admiring it from the outside than spending hours exploring inside.

But if you are travelling along the Montenegro coast, it was one of the most memorable stops I made.

Corner View of Sveti Stefan Island

The setting is incredible.

Montenegro is now a popular choice of destination for anyone travelling to the Balkans, and Svetui Stefan is iconic.

The island sits just off the mainland, connected by a thin strip of land, with beaches on either side and the Adriatic stretching behind it. From the road above, the view looks like something from a film set.

I would not necessarily plan a whole day around Sveti Stefan alone, but I would definitely include it as part of a wider Montenegro itinerary, especially if you are staying in Budva, Kotor, Petrovac or somewhere along the coast.

For me, Sveti Stefan is best treated as a scenic stop rather than a full-day destination.

Come for the viewpoint, walk down to the beach, take your photos, enjoy the coastal atmosphere, and then continue exploring the surrounding area.

Best viewpoints of Sveti Stefan.

One of the best things about Sveti Stefan is that you do not need access to the island itself to enjoy the most iconic views.

In fact, the best photos are taken from outside the resort.

Main road viewpoint.

The classic Sveti Stefan photo is taken from the main coastal road above the island.

This is the viewpoint where you can see the full shape of the island, the narrow causeway, both beaches and the Adriatic Sea behind it.

If you have seen Sveti Stefan on Instagram, Pinterest or Montenegro travel guides, there is a good chance the photo was taken from this angle.

This is the best place to capture the famous postcard view.

The road viewpoint works particularly well because you are high enough above the coastline to see the whole island properly. From beach level, Sveti Stefan still looks beautiful, but you do not get the same sense of scale or shape.

If you only have time for one viewpoint, make it this one.

Beach-level view.

After seeing Sveti Stefan from above, it is worth heading down towards the beach for a completely different perspective.

From beach level, the island feels much closer and more dramatic. You can see the stone buildings, the causeway and the water surrounding the island in much more detail.

This is also a better angle if you want photos with the sea in the foreground or a more relaxed coastal feel.

The beach-level view is not as iconic as the road viewpoint, but it gives you a better sense of what Sveti Stefan actually feels like when you are standing there.

It is also a good spot to slow down for a while rather than just stopping for a quick photo.

Sunset angle.

Sveti Stefan is especially beautiful around sunset.

The warm light softens the stone buildings, the sea becomes deeper in colour, and the island looks even more cinematic.

The weather was clear for me, which made this easily the best time to photograph Sveti Stefan.

For sunset, I would start at the main road viewpoint, then head down towards the beach if you have time.

The road viewpoint gives you the wide classic shot, while the beach gives you a calmer end-of-day atmosphere.

If you are creating content for your blog, Pinterest or Instagram, sunset is the time that gives Sveti Stefan the strongest visual impact.

How to get to Sveti Stefan.

Sveti Stefan is located on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, around 9 km from Budva.

The easiest way to visit is by car, especially if you are doing a wider Montenegro road trip.

Driving gives you the freedom to stop at the viewpoint above the island, continue down to the beach area, and combine Sveti Stefan with nearby places along the coast.

From Budva, the drive usually takes around 15–20 minutes depending on traffic.

From Kotor, it normally takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour, although summer traffic can make this longer.

From Petrovac, it is roughly 20–25 minutes by car.

You can also visit by taxi from Budva, which is probably the easiest option if you do not have a rental car. Just make sure to agree on the price or use a reliable local taxi app where available.

There are also buses along the coast, but they are less convenient if your main goal is to stop at the best viewpoints. Some viewpoints are along the road, and walking along narrow coastal roads is not always ideal.

Budva to Sveti Stefan - Cycling the Seven Bay trail.

If you are an adventure seeker, then cycling from Budva to Sveti Stefan on the Seven Bay Trail is the perfect choice, and an activity that makes Budva a popular Montenegrin city.

The 9km route each way will take you through the bustling beach bar scene (perfect for a refreshment stop), through several long tunnels which are covered in some inspiring graffiti which adds an arty touch to the city.

Finally, as you get closer to the island, you will ride Milocer park (Montenegro’s answer to Central Park in New York City).

As you can see on the map, beaches in Budva are abundant, but the beach with the best view is definitely Sveti Stefan, so make sure you save your sunbathing for after the first half of your bike ride.

You will find some stunning Mediterranean restaurants alongside the whole of the trail, so you are spoiled for choice as you make your way down through the beaches.

Tips for visiting Sveti Stefan.

Budva and Kotor Bay are both popular destinations for day trips from Dubrovnik and Sveti Stefan Island definitely ticks the box as an attraction worth visiting during your day trip.

Here are some tips to make your day run smoother:

  • Manage expectations.
You can’t usually wander around the island itself. Visit for the views, beaches and photos, not a full old-town experience.

  • Time your visit right.
Go early morning or sunset for better light and fewer crowds. Midday light is harsh and less photogenic.

  • Use the road viewpoint safely.
The best viewpoint is along the coastal road — only pull over where it’s safe.

  • Get better photos.
Use a zoom or portrait mode to tighten your shot. It makes the island stand out much more.

  • Don’t skip the beach.
The famous view is from above, but the beach-level angle adds a completely different perspective.

  • Check access before you go.
The island is part of a luxury resort, and access changes. Aman has confirmed reopening plans, but dates can vary — always double check.

  • Combine it with other stops.
Don’t plan a full day just for Sveti Stefan. It works best as a scenic stop along the Montenegro coast.

Awesome views of the Adriatic Sea.

Awesome views of the Adriatic Sea.

Kotor is another great option for your Montenegro trip.

One thing is guaranteed on a trip to Montenegro.. Beautiful scenery and sunshine!

Kotor is only around 30 mins away, and is home to an awesome bay which draws in global visitors through world famous cruise ships.

There is a fortress perched high into the Mountains that offers the best picturesque photo of the bay.

My favourite part in Kotor Bay was taking a speed boat ride to the Blue Caves.
