I’ll be honest, I wasn’t completely sure about visiting Costa Rica in May.
I was worried that rainy days might ruin my trip and make outdoor adventures more difficult.
However, as I walked along the Mistico Hanging Bridges in La Fortuna, surrounded by thick rainforest, with warm sunshine breaking through the trees and hitting my face, that doubt disappeared instantly.

The Green season was in full flow. Vibrant green all around me, deafening jungle sounds, and the sloths were out to see us.
That moment completely changed how I see travelling here in May.
The landscapes were richer, the air felt fresher, and the country had a lively energy.

Costa Rica weather in May – What is it really like?
If you’ve never experienced Costa Rica in the green season, May can sound a little intimidating.
When I was checking the weather forecast before my trip it didn’t look promising, however, I learned two things on my trip.
The best areas of Costa Rica are amazing all year round.
Forecasts change fast in Costa Rica, so don’t panic if you see rain icons.
Heavy rain, clouds, cancelled trips. It didn’t exactly sound like the perfect holiday, however, I embraced it, and it really did pay off.
The reality on the ground is very different, and was far more enjoyable than most people would expect.
May is the transition month.
The country shifts from the dry season into the green season, and everything starts to come alive.
The forests deepen in colour, waterfalls grow in power, and the air feels way fresher after the first rains. It’s the point where Costa Rica starts looking like the tropical paradise that you and I imagined.

Yes, technically May marks the start of the rainy season.
But that doesn’t mean constant rain or ruined days. In most places, especially on the Pacific side, the pattern is simple: sunny mornings, cloud build-up in the afternoon, then short tropical showers later in the day, or through the night.
This was the running theme during my time in la Fortuna and Monteverde.

Temperatures & Humidity in May.
Costa Rica stays warm year-round, but May does feel slightly more humid, especially in rainforest areas and along the coast.
Daytime temperatures usually sit between 25–32°C, depending on where you are.
I can still remember vividly, the sweat dripping off me on our Rio Celeste hike, even with shade.
In places like La Fortuna and Monteverde, the humidity is balanced by shade, cloud cover, and cooler evenings.
Along the coast, especially around Tamarindo, I found it felt much hotter, but the ocean breeze helped massively.
If you’re spending time in the capital, it can still be comfortable in May with the right pacing, and plenty of refreshments.

What Is the ‘Green Season’ in Costa Rica?
The rainy season is called the green season for a reason, as this is when the country looks its best.
Nature, nature, and more nature!
I found everything to be richer, deeper, and more alive.. Walking through Tenorio National Park was like entering another world. The sounds and colours were crazy!
Places like Montezuma Waterfalls and El Salto swimming hole are also more impressive with extra water flowing, and the jungle feels thick and vibrant rather than dry and dusty.
If, like me, you enjoy photography, this is also when Costa Rica really shines.
With vibrant green, misty clouds, and some rare wildlife enhancing every tourist spot.
It’s no surprise that many of my favourite Instagram shots from the country came during this trip.

The Reality: Sunshine + Showers = Best of both worlds.
Costa Rica in May usually means exploring in sunshine and relaxing to the sound of rain.
I actually found the sound of rainfall helped me sleep in the evenings after some intense active adventures through the days.
You hike, swim, explore, and adventure in the mornings. Then, as the clouds roll in, you slow down, grab a coffee, enjoy lunch, or head for hot springs.
On my recent trip, It created a natural pace that felt far more balanced than racing around in full heat all day.
If you’re travelling for nature, atmosphere, and experience, not just blue skies, then May is a good option.

I found travelling to Costa Rica in May to be fantastic as it feels so much quieter.
The peak dry season has ended. The winter crowds have gone, spring break is over, and the country starts to slow down, especially with hotels, transport, and activities.
There are always tourists in Costa Rica, and that’s part of its charm, but in May, it feels far more balanced.
I found the national parks to be much more pleasant to explore, and I wasn’t battling with large tour groups at viewpoints.

The Shoulder Season Advantage.
May sits firmly in shoulder season, and that comes with some real benefits.
Accommodation is easier to book, tours feel less crowded, and restaurants don’t feel overwhelmed. You’re far more likely to have moments of solitude in the forests.
I noticed this especially when moving between different regions. Places that can feel busy in the high season feel a lot calmer.
There are always disadvantages, like less shuttle services, or more rain etc, but the experiences can be much better!

Prices in May – Is Costa Rica Cheaper?
Yes, I find Costa Rica to be generally cheaper in May, but it’s not too dramatic. It is a very expensive country by Central America’s prices, regardless of the season.
It’s a quieter, better-value version of the country, where prices soften and availability improves without sacrificing quality or experiences.
Accommodation.
Accommodation is where I noticed the biggest difference.
As the green season begins, many hotels and eco-lodges lower their nightly rates or become more flexible with bookings. You’ll often find:
Better room availability.
Fewer minimum stay requirements.
Occasional green-season discounts.
Places that book out weeks in advance during the dry season are far easier to secure in May, and you’re more likely to get the room you actually want rather than what’s left.
I would never have secured my private bungalow next to the howler monkeys in Montezuma in the peak season.
It’s not cheap travel, but it’s better value
Tours & Activities.
Tours generally keep the same prices year-round, but May feels like a different experience.
Group sizes are smaller, bookings are easier, and tours feel less rushed. Whether it’s waterfalls, wildlife tours, hanging bridges, or adventure activities, you’re not competing with peak-season crowds.
In some cases, operators will offer small shoulder-season incentives or be more flexible with timings – not guaranteed, but more common than in high season.
Transport & Getting Around.
Transport costs don’t change dramatically in May, but availability improves.
Shared shuttles and buses are easier to book due to crowds, and you’re less likely to deal with fully booked services or tight connections. There is an actual reduction in services though, usually from 2/3 per day to 1 per day between places like Tamarindo and La Fortuna.
If you’re travelling from the capital, routes like the San Jose to La Fortuna public bus are straightforward and less pressured than in peak season, making travel days feel a little more relaxed.

May is when Costa Rica really comes into its own. The rainforests are lush, waterfalls are powerful, wildlife is active, and crowds begin to thin out.
These were my favourite places on my last solo trip, as they all really excelled during Costa Rica’s green season.
La Fortuna & Arenal Volcano.
I found La Fortuna to be outstanding in May.
The rainforest is vibrant, waterfalls are at full power, and the Arenal Volcano backdrop looks dramatic against the clouds. The occasional mist only adds to the atmosphere, especially when walking through the jungle, or soaking in hot springs.
This is one of the best places in the country to experience the green season properly, everything feels wild, fresh, and alive.

Monteverde Cloud Forest.
Sitting higher in the mountains than La Fortuna, Monteverde has a completely different feel.
It’s cooler, mistier, and far more atmospheric.
In May, that cloud forest character really comes into its own.
The air is fresh, the forest feels thicker, and low clouds drift through the trees, giving the place a quiet, surreal vibe.
As with La Fortuna, in the green season, Monteverde feels exactly as you would expect.

Tamarindo & Pacific Coast Beaches.
The Pacific coast has an amazing energy all year round, and May is no different.
Mornings are often bright and calm, the heat builds through the day, and by late afternoon the sky starts to shift, as sunset is near.
Standing on the beach in Tamarindo with the sun dropping into the Pacific, a cold beer in hand is a simple moment, but it is hands down one of my all time favourite travel experiences.
I found Tamarindo to be all about atmosphere. And in May, the Pacific coast offers the coastal town plenty of it.

Montezuma feels more alive in May, but also noticeably quieter than Tamarindo.
The whole area has that relaxed, slightly bohemian feel that makes it very easy to relax in the moment.
There are some awesome activities in Montezuma, but I found myself wandering, and chilling more than the other spots in Costa Rica.

I loved every single moment of my visit to Costa Rica in the green season. Here is a selection of the highlights for May.
Waterfall Chasing.
If there is one thing Costa Rica does exceptionally well in May, it’s waterfalls.
As the green season begins, rivers fill and streams start trickling down, with the result being powerful, dramatic waterfalls, made even more amazing by the thick, glowing rainforest surrounding them.
I noticed the difference straight away around La Fortuna. After a night of rain, visiting La Fortuna Waterfall felt completely different to the dry season. The volume of water was incredible, as it was so powerful.
The same is true in places like Montezuma, where the Montezuma Waterfalls also become a series of powerful cascades rather than gentle pools.
If waterfalls are high on your list, May is a good choice.

Wildlife Spotting.
One of the biggest advantages of visiting Costa Rica in May is how alive the rainforests feel. As the green season begins, the local inhabitants wake up.
I will never forget the deafening sounds of Mistico Park as I explored.
I also spotted sloths curled up in the canopy, monkeys crashing through branches, frogs hiding in their little homes, and the most colourful butterflies you can imagine.
I noticed this especially in rainforest areas and around waterfalls, where the combination of moisture and fresh growth brings animals closer to the paths. National parks and jungle reserves feel busy, noisy, and full of energy in May, in the best possible way.

Soaking in hot springs while warm rain fell around us, and the sunny day turned to pitch black was such a surreal moment.
This was nature at its best, and one of Costa Rica’s most atmospheric experiences.
May was a great time to enjoy this.
The cooler air after showers makes the thermal pools even more enjoyable, and the surrounding rainforest feels incredibly fresh.
It’s one of those experiences that definitely felt better with some light rainfall, and cool air.

Ziplining & Adventure Tours.
May brought me some surprises on my last visit.
There I was ziplining in Montezuma, with the canopy to myself.
Just me and the two safety guides.
Adventure activities are just as good in May, if not better. With fewer crowds around, everything feels more relaxed, more personal, and less rushed.
I ran out of fun before I ran out of time.
Also, flying through the jungle canopy, crossing hanging bridges, rafting through rainforest rivers all feels more immersive when the forest is alive and mist hangs in the air.

Surfing on the Pacific Coast.
May marks the start of better swell on the Pacific coast, making it a great time for surfing. Beaches around Tamarindo, Santa Teresa, and the Nicoya Peninsula see consistent waves and fewer people in the water.
It’s a brilliant month for both beginners and more experienced surfers.
It was my first time surfing during my Costa Rica trip in May, and the waves were perfect to try and learn. The favourable conditions, along with Antonio’s assistance meant I caught several waves.

Is May good for beaches in Costa Rica?
Yes, however, with one caveat.
If you understand how the weather patterns work, May can be a very enjoyable time for beaches in Costa Rica.
You won’t get the guaranteed, all-day blue skies of dry season, but you will get warm temperatures, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed atmosphere along the coast.
The key is choosing the right side of the country.
Pacific Coast.
The Pacific coast is the best choice for beaches in May.
This side of the country, including places like Tamarindo, Manuel Antonio, and the Nicoya Peninsula, often enjoys sunny, bright mornings with calm conditions, followed by cloud build-up and short showers later in the day.
This made it ideal for my morning surfing lessons during my time in Tamarindo.
As well as surf, you can swim, relax, and walk the beach in the morning. I found myself walking along the beach in Montezuma in the sunshine each morning, and I didn’t see another person for ages.
I loved the peaceful vibes, before jumping into a quirky cafe in the town centre for coffee and lunch.

The Caribbean coast is more unpredictable in May.
Some days can be hot, sunny, and beautiful, while others may see heavier rain and cloud cover. It’s not a bad choice, but it’s less reliable than the Pacific side at this time of year.
If your trip is short and beach time is a priority, the Pacific coast is generally the safer option in May.

Like any destination and time of year, visiting Costa Rica in May comes with both advantages and trade-offs. The key is understanding whether it matches your intentions.
For most travellers, the positives heavily outweigh the negatives - this was definitely the case for me.

Some afternoon rain is likely.
May does bring showers, usually later in the day. It rarely rains all day, but you do need to plan activities for the morning where possible.
Higher humidity, especially on the coast.
With the rain comes increased humidity, particularly in beach and jungle areas. It’s not unbearable, but it’s noticeable.
Less predictable beach weather.
Compared to the dry season, beach days are less consistent. You’ll still get sunshine, but not guaranteed all day, every day.
You trade guaranteed dry weather for greener landscapes, fewer crowds, and better value. Costa Rica is expensive these days, so this trade off is ideal for many tourists.
