A brief history about the Bruce Lee memorial statue in Hong Kong.

There is no doubt about it, Bruce Lee is a global icon. Hong Kong’s world-famous martial artist has empowered millions of lives, therefore, it is no surprise that tourists from all over the world flock to visit the bronze sculpture every year.

Although Bruce was born in San Francisco in 1940, he grew up in Kowloon and died in Hong Kong at age 32 - we are approaching the fifty year anniversary of his death in 1973.

The Hong Kong Bruce Lee Club raised $100,000 for the statue, so the Hong Kong people can honour their hero. The statue is a 2.5 metre high and bronze, with him taking his instantly recognisable pose from the movie ‘Fist of Fury’.

Bruce Lee’s memorial statue is elevated on a water feature, which is perfectly goes with his famous quote:

“Be water my friend. Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water” (Bruce Lee)

The world famous statue was designed and built by artist Cao Chong-en and then unveiled by Bruce Lee's brother Robert Lee on 27 November 2005, celebrating what would have been Bruce's 65th birthday.

The iconic Bruce Lee statue is situated on the world’s most popular promenade - Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade. Taking its honorary position on the Hollywood-style walk of fame, among one hundred other Hong Kong Celebrities, ‘Bruce Lee’ is one of four bronze sculptures. You will find the Bruce Lee statue right outside of Starbucks.

The transport in Hong Kong is very efficient, therefore, a trip to visit the statue can be squeezed into Hong Kong Layover, or a shorter trip.

There are several available transport options for you to reach the Avenue of Stars and Bruce Lee statue:

MTR

The MTR is one of the world’s most efficient transport networks, so is extremely convenient when travelling in and around Hong Kong. The Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station is the closest station to the Bruce Lee statue. Once you arrive, you need to leave via exit E and cross the road. After a short walk down to Salisbury Road, you can cross under a subway which brings you to Salisbury Garden. The Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade is just a little further.

Bus

You can reach the Avenue of Stars via many bus options. You can catch bus number 1, 2, 6, 7, 8A or 9 to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre/Star Ferry bus stop. Then it is a short walk to the Bruce Lee statue.

Ferry

If ferry is your preferred way of travelling around Hong Kong, then you have to catch the Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier. After exiting the station, it is just a short walk to the statue.

Once upon a time, a maritime motorway; a port amongst the busiest in the world! However, it is now on the decline, but tourism and interest is not. As well as being the perfect selfie spot in Hong Kong, the Kowloon Cultural District offers a scenic park (ideal for a picnic), art venues, restaurants and cafes, along with, the world-famous Avenue of Stars - where the Bruce Lee statue keeps the Hong Kong icon’s legacy alive.

The ‘Symphony of lights’ show has been a symbol of Hong Kong since 2004, entertaining millions of tourists. This unique multi-media show encapsulates Hong Kong, with its zestful energy and its array of spectacular audio-visual displays. A great option for a free tourist attraction in Hong Kong.

The Kowloon promenade is also one of the best sunset spots in Hong Kong - ideal if you arrive early for the light show.

The Symphony of lights show starts at 8pm daily and you do not require any admission ticket.

When is the best time to visit the Bruce Lee statue in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong has a tropical climate, therefore, your visit to one of the most iconic statues in the world can differ greatly, depending on when you visit. The best time to visit Victoria Harbour is between the months of October and December, as the weather is cool and dry.

Avoid the months of May until September (rainy season), if you want to stay dry. The Symphony of lights show can be cancelled during adverse weather conditions.

Can you handle the heat?

The Avenue of stars is one of the number one things to do for tourists in Hong Kong, so it can get very busy around the Bruce Lee statue during peak times. It can also get up to very high temperatures (35 degrees +) and uncomfortable humidity levels during the afternoons at certain times of the year.

The prime time to visit the Bruce Lee statue for a comfortable trip is on early mornings or evening sunsets. Alternatively, off season or during the week.

Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the war-torn city of Mostar, a life-sized bronze statue of Bruce Lee stands tall in Zrinjevac City Park. Unveiled in 2005, it serves as a powerful symbol of peace and unity, transcending ethnic divisions and reminding everyone of the unifying power of his spirit.
